Overview
Starting 1 July 2023, Food Handlers from both retail and non-retail food businesses are required to pass the WSQ Food Safety Course (FSC) Level 1. A Food Handler is defined as any person who handles and prepares food and beverages within food establishments licensed by SFA.
All Food Handlers must attain and maintain a valid Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) FSC Level 1. Food Handlers who have attained WSQ FSC Level 1 certification are permitted to engage in food handling activities for up to 5 years.
Since October 2014 Food Handlers must also attend WSQ FSC Level 1 (Refresher) at 5-year mark and the 10-year mark.
Eduquest is a training providers approved by SSG to provide Training and Certification.
Course Objective
On completion of this unit, participants will have the knowledge and skills in Food Safety and Hygiene and be able to apply them at their workplace.
The course will cover the following five topics:
Topic 1: Practise good personal hygiene
Topic 2: Use safe ingredients
Topic 3: Handle food safely
Topic 4: Store food safely
Topic 5: Maintain cleanliness of equipment and premises

Medium of instruction: English / Tamil translation / Malay translation.
Learning Outcome
To equip food handlers of both retail and non-retail food establishments with the knowledge and application skills to follow food safety and hygiene procedures and policies, as well as maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of premises.
Assessment
At the end of the course, candidates will be required to undergo an assessment for 1.5 hours which comprises of a Practical Performance (PP) and a Written Assessment which consists of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) and Short Answer Questions (SAQ).
Upon successful completion of the assessment and being certified 'Competent' candidates will be awarded a Statement of Attainment (SOA) by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).
To fulfil the assessment requirements, Food Safety Course Level 1 candidates are to strictly adhere to the attire requisites stated below.
Attire
- Wear Covered Shoes / Sneakers with socks
- Wear Long / Full Pants
- Have Clean, Short, Trimmed, Natural Nails (No Nailpolish, Gelish or Artificial Nails)
- Tie up Medium / Long Hair neatly
Note : Trainees may be sent back to change their attire if they fail to meet the above requirements
Who Should attend
Food Handlers including chefs, sous chefs, and cooks. Kitchen assistants, food stall assistants, bartenders and mixologists. Workers in food manufacturing companies including those in:
- Retail food establishments such as hawker stalls, food stalls at canteens and restaurants.
- Non-retail food establishments such as food manufacturers and food processing plants.
Minimum Entry Requirement
No formal qualification - Participants should have the ability to converse, read & write in English.

Upon successful course completion,self-sponsored singaporeans eligible for WSS scheme may apply for SSG TRAINING ALLOWANCE of $6 per hour, capped at 180 training hours per WSS eligibility year & TRAINING COMMITMENT AWARD*
The WSS trainees need to register for PayNow linked to NRIC (not mobile number) in order to receive the WSS training allowance.
